Retired Cabbie hired by Port Authority

Who better to untangle the traffic mess during the rebuilding at Ground Zero than the Daily News’ own Gridlock Sam?

The Port Authority has hired the renowned traffic expert and eponymous columnist, also known as Sam Schwartz, to corral congestion as the rebuilding efforts ramp up.

Schwartz will advise the agency coordinating the flow of thousands of trucks and cars with the vast numbers of pedestrians – tourists, PATH commuters and subway riders – around the site.

The authority said Schwartz will play a “critical role” in coordinating traffic patterns with lower Manhattan business and community representatives, who have complained of potential chaos at the site.

His contract does not include dealing with traffic in the area after construction is completed, when some 2,000 delivery trucks and buses entering the site each day will have to be inspected at an underground security center, an authority spokesman said.

Schwartz, a licensed professional engineer, began his traffic career as a cabbie. He has served as city traffic commissioner and first deputy transportation commissioner.

He’ll continue to write the Gridlock Sam column.
