NY cab driver saves ducks

June 29, 2008

A Manhattan taxi driver who saved a family of ducks whose goose was almost cooked when they waddled into traffic on a busy street is being honored for his compassion.

The Taxi & Limousine Commission says on Friday it’s honoring Sergio Castillo, who mashed his brakes when he saw the mother duck leading her ducklings onto Park Avenue a week ago.

Castillo says the mother duck made it across 67th Street but the ducklings walked under his cab. He says he gathered them up and returned them to their quacking mother before taking his passenger to her destination.

A park ranger returned the ducks to their home in Central Park.

The Captain Henry mascot from the NYC Ducks half-boat, half-bus amphibious vehicles tour company will present Castillo and his family with free tour and sightseeing passes.
