A brutal glitch in credit card processing is adding up to big money lost for thousands of yellow cab drivers.
The glitch in the taxis’ wireless communications devices developed Wednesday.
Operators worked to restore service to the cabs by late Thursday.
The problem kept customers in about half of the city’s cabs from using their credit or debit cards to pay their fares.
Cabbies who rent their taxis by the day found themselves unable to earn any money that way.
This is what we most feared when these systems were introduced. Now it is a reality!

Wow, this is interesting! Anyone know of a good Chicago cabbies website? Over 2000 Chicago cags use the Gleike Mini taximeter as a cash and credit card meter – it does not have advertising or ‘passenger’ screen. Rumors abound that the Gleike has programming in it that will enter a shutdown mode, and keep printing slips after every job that there is a meter problem and the meter will shut down after 200 trips, and then gives a trip count. Anyone know about this? Other rumors, that Gleike Taximeter Chicago has been bought into by a silent partner no one knows, so that cabbies are in the dark, phone answered by tape recordings. Anyone from Chicago visiting this website know what is going on? Is the cab meter actually programmed to shut down both cash and cc under certain conditions? What a mess!!!
This is a selfemployement job ,when I pay my lease in cash I have to accept all fairs in cash only ,anytime i wan to pay my lease in check õr debit card my garage refused, now in new jersey they start charging 4 percent for credit card users in any purchases .i hope in ny people will be charged an other fee for using credit cards,……….every driver must have his own access to his credit card account to verify that all credit are approved…….
