The cost of a taxi ride in New York City is rising by an average of 17 percent.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission approved the fare hike Thursday.
The base fare of $2.50 will not increase, but the mileage charge will.
The flat-rate fee between Manhattan and Kennedy Airport will jump from $45 to $52.
The surcharge to travel to or from Newark Liberty International Airport will rise from $15 to $17.50.
A cab ride of about three miles that now costs $12 will go up to approximately $14.
Taxi fares last increased in 2005.

Vow! 17%? big deal for all taxi driver…what about the elimination of the 5%? what was the percentage of increase on gas, rent , food cost, mta, tolls since 2005? you are looking on a sunflower seed with a magnetfying glass. people are already discuss the 17% will the tip, meaning the income on the driver remain the same, a big joke.
$52 is too much for a trip to JFK, and there are many cheaper alternatives including shuttle buses and the train.
Kudos to Bhairavi Desai,
I wasnt much interested in union but after watching her testinomy before the commission I am overwhelmed by the work she does. I think everyone should organize and form just 1 union. Together anything is possible… Divided we fail.
Instead of just complaining why dont we dedicate in making our union much more stronger so that we can even achieve furthermore rights we deserve.
So far nowhere it is mentioned that lease fee went up $9 + $1 = $10 under the disguise of CC transaction. $10 is 5% of $200 CC or 3% of $333 average CC. It could be $4.50 = 3% of $150 CC average. Therefore garage raised $5.50 daily lease, while drivers struggle with reduced trips in the first few weeks and no guarantee for normalized ridership. Former passengers have many other options: signinging up for bike sharing, discount airport bus, MTA and taking a walk. Better not work Monday, Tuesday with nice weather if you can, you may end up owing to garage or under $50 for yourself. Sorry for gloomy forecast.
Fare raise is one way and another hidden way to increase driver’s income is by increasing mobility, average travel speed not crawling in traffic in order to cover more paid travel miles in 10 or less hours. More taxi rides reduce more private cars. Good for environment and economy by saving time = money. Taxi should have special treatment in mobility. Current enforcement of NYPD, regulation of DOT no stopping in rediculous favor of bike right of way, bus lane camera tickets, etc are indirect congestion cause by deteriorating taxi service and increasing private cars.
So, were garage lease fees limited to $9 or $10!!! LOL. Don’f forget, if 5% is taken from the whole fare for a CC processing fee, it translates to a much higher double-digit percentage of what cabbie actually takes home for the day. Good luck to all.
Why cab drivers must wait for two months to get the benefits of the new cab-fare increase?
It takes time to adjust the meter according to the TLC, alll meter should be adjust to read a total amount when hit the stop button instead of seperate because most passenger does not know how it works ,for example, the fare is 8.50 and the surcharfe with MTA is !.50, the total should be $10. most of the time passenger read the total as $8.50 and give you $10. it ends up with no tip. how many of you have this problem? why aren’t the nytwa do something about this type of meter? who approve it? is this what TLC meant to improve driver’s income? LAMO
Thank you TLC,I’llhave that root canal done I was waiting for the past 3 years.Good luck slaves ,I hope you ‘ll get rich That extra 20 bucks is a road to happiness.
The cost of a taxi ride is rising by 17 percent after a long eight years. However, inflation is about FIVE percent every year, and the $ making opportunity almost unavailable for cabdrivers due to decreased riders’ ship! And a lot more bike-lanes and No Stopping Anytime sign out there to keep it low! I believe there is a solution to improve these conditions, but most cabdrivers not thinking and not doing anything about that, other than complaining. It is time to think and work on solutions collectively, and then the best solution will come from the observing cabdrivers! Who says cabdrivers can’t change this industry fairness? With the right-minded cab drivers, and industry leaders, everything is possible. Liveable wages, 40 hours of work, healthy lifestyle, joy! Or should be unchanged, and leave the opportunity to those who know how to have everything?
17% increase don’t mean nothing, how many percent your salary had increase since 2005 yssky….post it. and what make you think it is enough on this increase is good to driver? are you their employer?
