Around 10:12 a.m. a cab caught fire on the Queens-bound lower level of the 59th Street Bridge, according to the FDNY. And while there were no injuries reported, you can expect heavy delays as cleanup begins.
According to the FDNY the fire, which one witness speculates was caused by a battery fire, was a “minor one.

driver overheated!
That,s what stress does to people.
This is a one sign prove, garages don’t maintain their cars, they never changed oil, the engine got too hot wich affects the battery and could have caused the fire, Crown Vic is a steel horse, where is TLC, what they said about it? They have to teach mechanics too, not only drivers, and provide inspector every week to all garages to certify all cars condition, the one year inspection doesn’t work.
One question? Why would somebody dispatch his taxi with bad condition (dead tires, bad signals, meter, transmission, battery,…)?.
The medallion cost one million, driver work 24/7, lease paid by drivers, why this fire happened to taxi, who took the medallion and didn’t fix his car, corruption under way.
Every year more than dozens cabs caught fire! It is a serious problem in taxi cab safety! Also imagine, what would happen if the driver or passenger/s trapped in fire in those small hybrid taxicabs with dangerous partitions? Accident is happening every day! What if doors could not be opened, because the vehicle hit by the side, mechanical or electrical malfunction and gets into flames or explosion?
It is not the garages fault. The meter shop is probably to blame. Cab fires almost always start at the battery because of all the wiring that is done.
Do you guys’ buckle-up when driving a cab? I’m just curious, because I haven’t seen any cabdriver wearing seat belt in NYC.
Zen Then You haven’t been in my taxi..I’ve been buckling up for many years
This was a tragedy. You should be very careful while driving your taxi and make it sure that you are ready to take primary control in any tragic situation.
Another cab fire was reported in the ny post. Again the fire was under the hood probably the battery from all the wiring. Drivers keep your parachutes on!
Just a Tap on the Shoulder…
A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window.
For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then, the still shaking driver said, ‘Are you OK? I’m so sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.’ The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, ‘I didn’t realize that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle you so badly.’
The driver replied, ‘No, no, I’m the one who is sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for the past 25 years…
